“Embrace the suck and move the fuck on.”

I saw Tina Fey’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot about a month ago and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

I read some curious and varied reviews – a lot of people angry that it wasn’t a silly comedy, a lot of people put off by the crassness of it, and a lot of people feeling it wasn’t what they signed up for.

Dummies.

What I can say is I’m encouraged no one felt the need to label it a  “chick flick” (unless you count one women who called it ‘Eat Pray Love’ on acid). Could it be we are creeping beyond those stigmas, those labels?

I remember the 65th Academy Awards in 1993 – when Oscar celebrated “Year of the Woman“. It was in response to a record four females elected to the US Senate. Isn’t that a slap in the face? These women are talented and bright and worked hard to get to where they are, lumping them all in by gender is basically insinuating their accomplishments are conciliatory.

Babs was overlooked as Best Director for the Prince of Tides in 1992 – it was nominated for Best Picture and in six other categories (as well as garnering her directing noms from the Golden Globes and the Director’s Guild of America). It was a classic Oscar FU: good enough to be one of the best movies of the year, but in no part thanks to the director?

When Babs stepped to the podium the following ceremony to present – of all things Best Director – she expressed her hope for a time when we wouldn’t need special tributes to honour women in film.

While many celebrated a baby step, she demanded better.

note: There have only been four women nominated since the first awards in 1929 as Best Director: Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola and Kathryn Bigelow.

 A woman didn’t win best director until 2010 with  Kathryn Bigelow getting the statue for The Hurt Locker. A huge part of the headlines focused on the tidbit that she beat out ex-hubbie James Cameron, who was sitting behind her and *GASP* congratulated her!

Amazing writer/actor/producer/creator talents like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Lena Dunham, J Law, Amy Schumer, Shonda Rhimes, (and so many more), are making art that isn’t labelled “chick hit” and is enjoyed widely by women and men.

Most notably we are now seeing strong women that are fuck ups and flawed. They are characters that don’t roll out of bed with perfectly coiffed hair. They are learning and they are real.

They are also breaking box offices (ie Bridesmaids, Trainwreck) and Nielsen ratings (Parks and Rec, 30 Rock). Why else would studios take a chance on an all female remake of Ghostbusters?

As always, I find myself a million miles from where I began, but at least it is a place of hope… finally.

This fight is far from over, but if women continue to live as strong representations of what we can be rather than victims of what we have been, well… this world may become a more interesting place.

 

EASY PEASY MUNCHY CRUNCHY CUCUMBER FENNEL SALAD

serves 4 as a side

Ya, I realize this salad has nothing to do with female empowerment, but it is clean, colourful, bright and all kinds of refreshing!

Serve this as a side with anything BBQ or as a topping for tacos. I like to use these types of crunchy yummers on my favourite quickie meal – egg tacos.

DRESSING INGREDIENTS:

2 heaping tbsps plain full fat yogurt

1 tbsp olive oil

3 tsps lime juice

1/2 tsp sugar, honey or agave (or more to taste)

SALAD INGREDIENTS:

1 English cucumber

1 shallot, peeled and sliced lengthwise

1 small fennel bulb, thinly sliced, feathery tops reserved as garnish

3 cups thinly sliced purple cabbage

2 celery ribs, thinly sliced

2 packed cups chopped fresh mint, basil and/or cilantro

kosher salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

  • Combine all the dressing ingredients in a jar with a tight fitting lid and shake vigorously for a minute.
  • Slice your cucumber in half lengthwise. Using a small spoon (a grapefruit spoon works well), gently scrape the seeds from the inside and discard. Thinly slice on a bias. Toss all the salad ingredients with the dressing, taste for seasoning and scatter with any leafy fennel tops.

Voila!
